What it costs to move a mobile home

A mobile home move is priced like any oversize load, by distance, sections, escorts and permits, plus the setup work at the new lot. This Old House gives these national averages:

Type of moveTypical cost
Transport only (any size)$1,000 to $5,000
Single-wide, transport and setupAbout $6,500
Double-wide, transport and setupAbout $11,500

National averages from This Old House, 2026 mobile home moving cost guide. Your quote depends on distance, the home and both sites.

What a full move includes

Before the move

Disconnecting utilities, removing skirting and steps, taking out tie-downs, and getting the home ready to roll. A double-wide is split into its two halves.

Transport

Each section rides on its own toter truck, with escort vehicles where the width calls for them, under a Louisiana DOTD permit.

Setup at the new site

Blocking, leveling and tying the home down, then joining double-wide halves back together. Louisiana law sets tie-down rules for its hurricane wind zones.

Permits

The mover handles the DOTD trip permit. You'll usually need a placement permit where the home is going, such as Lafayette Consolidated Government's mobile home permit.

Common questions

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Lafayette?

This Old House puts transport alone at $1,000 to $5,000. A full move with setup averages about $6,500 for a single-wide and $11,500 for a double-wide. Those are national numbers; a short move inside Lafayette Parish and a move across the state will price very differently. See the cost guide.

Why does a double-wide cost so much more?

A double-wide moves as two separate sections, so you're paying for two loads, and then the crew has to join the halves back together at the new site. That's why the full-service average roughly doubles. See moving a double-wide.

What permits are needed to move a mobile home in Louisiana?

The mover needs a Louisiana DOTD oversize permit for the trip. DOTD charges $10 per trip, and the permit covers one trip of up to 72 hours with no extensions (Louisiana DOTD, Regulations for Trucks, Vehicles and Loads (2026)). At the new site, Lafayette Consolidated Government requires a mobile home permit application and approval before it issues a permit (Lafayette Consolidated Government, building permits). Other parishes and towns have their own rules. The permits page has more.

Does the mover need a license?

Yes. Louisiana licenses manufactured home installers and transporters. The licensing used to sit with the Louisiana Manufactured Housing Commission and is now run by the Office of State Fire Marshal (Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal). Ask any mover for their license number and check it before you sign.
